In a revolutionary effort, from 14 February world’s first Fairmined and Faretrade gold selling will become operational. It will offer a better life for communities and miners involved in gold mining.

This new variety of gold is going to be launched by the first 20 companies that includes CRED, the ethical jeweler, Harriet Kelsall, the luxury jeweler and the oldest jeweler Garrard.

In recent times the price of gold has surged to the new heights. However, it has resulted in thousands of poor people being lured to the dangerous industry of gold mining. In the gold supply chain they are the most vulnerable people who are unable to cope with the gold rush of 21st century.

Fairtrade has come out with a new report that provides details about poor conditions in which these small-scale industry workers operate. The estimate by International Labor Organization shows that compared to mining at larger scale, accidents are more than six times in the small scale mining sector. At the same time, these workers also have to work in direct contact of toxic chemicals like nitric acid, cyanide and mercury that are used to process the gold.

Sir Steve Redgrave, ambassador to Fairtrade and five times gold medal winner in Olympic said: ‘Consumers must demand a higher standard while purchasing the gold and this can be easily achieved by them if they support this initiative. ‘

In Condoto, Columbia the Oro Verde’s community leader Jorge Perea said: ‘The certification provided by Fairmined and Fairtrade will protect the rights of miners who will have a better quality of life, beside the initiative will improve the ethnic group’s identity. That was the goal of Oro Verde when this process was started.

Our common dreams is going to be realized after the hard work put in by the ARM to strengthen the alliance between the Fairtrade system and Latin America’s mining communities.’

Fairtrade Foundation’s executive director Harriet Lamb said: ‘Consumers do not have access to complete information about the working conditions of gold miners. As a responsible consumer they do want a better working condition and a fair deal for them. ‘

It is not only the miners but even the environment that is kept safe when everyone works according to a set of standards.
